Little Beaver Triathlon 29-05-2010
It was a very grim day up north at the first of the three World Championship qualifiers. Blustery winds, torrential rain and freezing temperatures made for a long day, made even longer with the run almost 12km!
Just as the swim started, the sky opened and the rain poured down. Despite this, the Tritons showed true grit and determination. Rob Baker led our troupe of weary warriors in the 40-44 category with a 12th place AG finish in 2:23:23, followed by Steve Walker in 2:33:26 and less than a minute behind, Ed Simpson, finishing his first olympic distance triathlon in a time of 2:34:24. All three finished in the top 30 in their AG, an impressive feat considering the level of competition in that AG!
After paddling through the muddy swim, Steve Woods, Mark Cook and Will Smart cruised over the undulating 2 lap bike course to finish in 2:29:30, 2:49:06 and 2:59:19 respectively. On a very tough course with a severe bike climb, in horrid weather, the times that all our athletes achieved were phenomenal.
The girls performance was nothing short of spectacular, with both Jane Hinne and Coralie Glaunes finishing top ten in their AG, 6th and 9th place respectively! After battling rain, wind and cold, the results on this day speak for themselves and certainly show the high calibre of athletes that we have in the club.
Well done to all who competed.

The Best of the Best 16-05-2010
Big Vern Thomas has done it again! After finishing top 2 in his age group over Steyning , Ashbourne and The Big Cow Emberton Duathlons, Vernon has won The British Ranking Series for Duathlon in age group M!!! Vernon has been a real inspiration to us all over the last several decades that he has been involved in sport. If we could all be so talented and borrow just a little of his tenacity and dedication we should be so lucky. WELL DONE VERN!!!
Tough As Nails.........or is that Tough as Males???
5 minutes faster than last year, Freddie Sumption made her mark at East Grinstead Sprint by posting a result worthy of the men’s category! Freddie finished 4th in F 30-34 and 6th lady overall, posting a new PB of 1:17:16-the fruit of many years of effort in the sport. Freddie has exemplified how time, persistence and effort has a direct result on performance. "It's the first tri I ever did, in 2006, and I was on the last page of results, and after 5 years of trying I have finally managed to scrape onto the first page (just). East Grinstead is not too far from home, very well organised, doesn't start ludicrously early in the morning, and has a pretty big and varied field.... I plan to do it next year!” (FS) Hopefully we can encourage some others to take it up as well. Excellent day at the office Freds.
Suuuuuuuuuuuuuperb at Eton
It was the weekend of the sprints! Jane Hinne creamed the field finishing 2nd in her AG, 3rd in F 40+ and 12th lady overall in her debut Sprint Tri of the 2010 season. Its hardly suprising with all the training she has been throwing herself into, that she achieves such fantastic results and is such a formidable force to be reckoned with! Finishing just in front of Jane, by a mere 16 sec, was Andrew Smith, and Ruth Davison also finishing not far behind in 1:33:53. This was the first of the Human Race Sprints of 2010, taking place on a slightly rolling course, around the rowing lake, completely spectator friendly. Though it might seem you are digging a bit deeper in your pockets in terms of cost, its a great course for those of you starting out, or those that feeeeeel the neeeed for sppeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!!! Next evening sprint coming up 26-05-2010.
Etape Caledonia
In the town of Pitlochry, in the shadow of the Grampian Mountains of Northern Scotland, is where the 130 km Etape Caledonia annually takes place. This year, Bruno Mahsoudi cycled the 130km distance round the lochs, over steep hills and 1949m of ascent in a time of 3:59:39. This time placed Bruno, very comfortably, in the top quarter of the field of riders. Etape Calendonia is supported by MacMillan Cancer Support, so not only is it a great race on traffic free roads (where you can keep an eye out for Nessie and her relatives!), but a race for a great cause. This race fills up quickly so write it in your diary and enter early. The next Etape in the series is August, in County Clare, Ireland. Well done on your result Bruno!
Marshmen
3 men. Two races. One team. TRITONS! This year, Velocity events put on something for everyone with a half ironman and ¾ ironman distance down in Kent. Taking part in the Marshman Middle was Simon Neville and Matthew Lonsdale who finished the swim one second apart, then the high winds began to blow apart the competitors and it was wet gear on! Simon finished strongly with a 9th place finish in his age group and an overall time of 5:40:25. Not far behind was Matthew Lonsdale, finishing with a grimace of determination in a time of 5:59:08 in his debut triathlon of the season. In a fantastic show of effort, Keith Sanders took 2nd place overall in the ¾ ironman, finishing just behind Mark Stenning in 6:42:11! Clearly all the miles that Keith has been putting into the bike have worked, as he nailed the fastest bike split of the day of 3:26:53. Whether it was the long or the longest distance, all our Marshmen beat the battle of the bogs this weekend and are well deserving of our accolades. Well done gents!

Race the New Forest!! 02-05-2010
Torrential rain was the forecast of the day, but the beautiful backdrop of the New Forest helped our athletes to get on top of their game! We've had spectacular reports of New Forest events from last year, including the Swashbuckler and the Forestman, and the olympic distance race did not dissapoint. It was the first tri of the year for our Fab Four: Ed Simpson, Sue Godsell, Andrew Gwynn and Peppi-Marie Holder, and what a first race it was! Bringing home the silverware was Sue, with a 2nd place finish in AG and 4th lady overall! Ed screamed over the bike course in a time of 59:51 placing him in 12th position in a very competitive age group. Andrew was on form with a PB of 6 minutes from last year, in a time of 2:20:50, not a small feat on wet roads after a 13 degree swim! Peppi, after flapping about in T2, due to her freezing experience in the water, outdid herself, smiling all the way round the course, but finishing her 2:29:20 race with a grimace of determination! Surely that is deserving of cake all around? This is a fantastic course with excellent organization and support, boasting albeit a cold swim, a spectator friendly course on bike and run, including a mountain bike accessible path the way around the run course. Three steep bike climbs to get you warmed up for the run are not so bad with such lovely surroundings to race in. This is definitely a race to put on your list for next year. There is still availability in the Beaulieu Tri, Forestman, Boskman and One Last Tri. Well done to all who competed!
Steyning Sprint 02-05-2010
Freezing cold temperatures and torrential gales started off the bank holiday weekend with a bang. Despite these minor inconveniences, Freddie Sumption started off her tri season with a bang coming 2nd in her age group and 3rd female overall! Race day being the 'best' time to tri out new kit, Freddie took out her Planet X and Asics Kayanos, attributing her great result to great kit?!! Now, I'm a believer of fast kit, but surely this result was down to Freddie's own ability. Great result!
Thames Turbo Sprint Race 2 03-05-2010
Anel Meyer took on her first sprint race of the year this past weekend, the second in a series of four put on by Thames Turbo. Clearly all the effort Anel's been putting into her training is paying off, and she now can put a 1:28:34 time to her name! A truely impressive result that Anel can build on throughout the season. Well done!

Virgin London Marathon 25-04-2010
Perfect running weather this past weekend for our troupe of Tritons taking part in VLM. Mitchell Dann, Bruno Mahsoudi, Steve Walker, Gary Shaw, Louise Johnson, Will Smart, Malcolm Davies, and our lone marathon virgin Mark Cook braved the undulating 26.2 mile course producing some fantastic results and many PB's!! Up to 30 km Dr. Malc was in the lead, flying over the course in a time of 1:25:44 for 21 km! Mitch was the first triton home in a personal best time of 3:04:45, knocking 22 minutes off his previous marathon PB! From my vantage point, squished into a barrier in front of the Spanish Galleon, I managed to catch Steve and Bruno screaming past me to 3:19:27 and 3:25:09 finishes, making that a new PB for Steve by nearly 10 minutes! Gary achieved an awesome result, including that elusive negative split that so many of us wish we could find, resulting in a 3:58:59! Our lady triton, Louise, narrowly edged out Will by 2 minutes, cruising home to a 4:16:29 and 4:18:29 finish respectively. Mark was our VLM virgin, boasting a 4:46:37 and the satisfaction of his first marathon in the bag! A great day with many Tritons scattered along the course screaming encouragment to our athletes. Well done everyone.
Lisboa International Triathlon 25-04-2010
A big "Chapeau!" to Coralie Glaunes and Fiona Boxall who raced the Half Ironman in Lisbon, bringing home 2nd and 3rd place medals in their respective age groups!! It was a big surpise to both, to hear that they had both placed-and that they would both be posing for their winning photos wearing a compression sock/jeans/t shirt combo! (One for the front page?) A fantastic course boasting a challenging swim and bike, and a sea front run supported by many spectators creating a great atmosphere. Coralie creamed the course in 5:04:51 and Fiona in 5:15:40-result!!! Come on the girls! I see a great season looming.
