About Us

We have been operating since 1986 and have established ourselves as one of the 'old guard' of triathlon, where a bunch of like-minded individuals get together to motivate and improve on the the various aspects of this demanding sport.

We welcome anyone who is interested in the sport, from the total novice through to the experienced elite athlete. We pride ourselves on being local and have provided the grass roots encouragement that launched Sian Brice's triathlon career, a competitor in the Sydney Olympics.

Requirements

The main priority is to have fun and be safe and fit. Triathlon is a tough sport and cycling on the road can be dangerous. Whilst we don't have many requirements, you should have a reasonable base level fitness (triathlon is an excellent way of shedding those extra pounds) and not suffer from any condition that may risk injury or accident when swimming, cycling or running. Don't think that you have to be fantastically fit to join - the club socials are testament to carbo loading with curry and beer! - we do ask that if you attend the swimming sessions, you can swim 400m front crawl however slowly (running - no experience necessary, just turn up in your trainers, and on the bike - look out for our novice rides).

Costs

We have tried to keep costs as low as possible - membership is £35 per year. In 2013, UK Athletics raised their affiliation costs to help pay for Olympic legacy projects, which is reflected in an optional £10 surcharge for UKA membership, too. The cost for swimming is £3 for members and £5 for non-members per-session, alternatively you can set up a regular payment of £20 per month. The first swim for anyone thinking of joining is free. For details of how to find our training pool locations see the 'training' page.

Kit consideration

Kit requirements are a minimum of swimming costume, decent running shoes, a road-worthy bike and a safety helmet. Beyond that, as the saying goes 'you pay your money - you take your choice'. Triathlon can look at times like a sport for the well heeled - flash bikes, loads of kit and a year round sun tan. It doesn't have to be that way and many use patched up bikes, second-hand equipment and yesterday's sports fashion clothing. We reckon that Lance Armstrong would've beaten any of us in a bike race if he was using his mum's old 3-speed bike with a basket! Start with minimum expense and improve as and when you can afford it and think you need it.

Social activities

We pride ourselves on  being a genuinely friendly club, and the proof of this is the number of Tritons who have been with us for years and the personal friendships that have developed. There are various social events throughout the year including a summer barbeque and Christmas meal.  We have a monthly get together, usually around the last weekend of the month in one of the local pubs, time and location vary - speak to members for more info.
